How To Be An Everyday Superhero

The superhero genre of TV shows and movies is big right now. FlashArrowSupergirl, and Wonder Woman are just a few of the examples. The last several years have seen a resurgence of superheroes making the leap off the comic book pages onto the screen. Why?

Perhaps it is, quite simply, that the world is starving for heroes. It seems that many people hold out hope that wrongs should be righted and good should triumph over evil. Often times, the perception is that we live in a world exactly opposite of this hope. In a world overrun with an endless supply of problems, is there a way we can make a difference? Can we be a hero to someone in the orbit of our life?

Let us take a page out of our favorite superhero’s playbook to make a difference in the world around us. Here are three ways:

  1. Be observant. Many superheroes seem to have specialized radar that clues them in to needs on a moment’s notice. If we develop skills to see the needs around us, we will be halfway to making a difference. The tiniest of clues does not escape the notice of a superhero on a case. My experience is that people will drop hints in conversation about ways I could help them. If I am not paying attention, I will miss them.
  2. Stand up for what is right. Superheroes arrive just in the nick of time to protect those who are being threatened with harm. They do not waver in the face of criticism. Let us take a lesson from this and stand firm when faced with opposition. Those around us who are vulnerable need a helping hand from people who have the motivation and means to be a blessing.
  3. Serve humanity for the greater good. Giving of themselves and sacrificing for others are the hallmarks of many superheroes. For me, this is summed up in the person of Jesus Christ. His sacrifice inspires and challenges me to give of myself to serve others. There is no greater way to express love for another individual than by serving them without regard to our own well-being.

While the world is looking for heroes, let us not miss the opportunity we have each day to be a hero to someone around us. Our action probably will not lead to the international acclaim of our fictional superheroes, but it could be just the difference that person needs to keep going. We can make our mark on the world around us by living out the qualities of our favorite superheroes.
